Turpin's get new strip

As the new indoor bowls season gets underway and following on from last year’s successful promotion to the Essex County Division 1 and the continued success of the Turpin’s Darts teams. It was decided the club would look at a new club shirt design to bring the 2 sides of the club together under one shirt.

After a comprehensive selection a shirt design was selected and the search for a sponsor was on, after approaching a number of companies, Total Solution from Ipswich stepped up and agreed to sponsor the new shirts, based in Ipswich Total Solution has been providing IT Services to East Anglia and beyond for over 30 years.

On Sunday Tony Willamson the owner of Total Solution came to Turpin’s Indoor Bowls Club for the formal handover of the shirts, after a quick tour of the club and a try out on the green the shirt was formally handed over to Mike Spraget as a Committee representative.

Turpin’s would like to thank Total Solution for their sponsorship and support.

New Defibrillator Installed

Training for Club Members on the New Defibrillator

A chance viewing of an interview with Mark King speaking about why the Oliver King Foundation was started set off a chain of reactions culminating in a defibrillator being purchased for Turpin’s Bowls club.

Mark spoke passionately about how losing Oliver, a keen footballer, who at the age of 12 had already been signed for one of the biggest professional teams, collapsed and died of SADS. The Foundation was formed with the intent of getting defibs into sports facilities across the country.

So one overcast Thursday saw a group of members attend a training session, delivered by paramedic with over 25 years experience and a dry sense of humour , at Turpins IBC. The training was great with all coming away with a working knowledge of both the defib and what to do with it. More training sessions will be held at the club for members because as was stressed in the day the worst thing you can do is do nothing. The machine gives oral instructions throughout so remember if needed do something!

Pairs Tournament and dates for your Diary

Club Handicap Pairs Tournament

So on Saturday 02nd October we held the 2nd of our pre-season tournaments which was a Handicap Drawn Pairs with leagues and a knockout.

As with the previous week everyone had a great time and as such we will be running these again later in the year. The results were as follows:

Club Quiz Night

We will be holding a Quiz night on 27th November starting at 8pm at Turpin's, please register your team with us at enquiries@turpinsibc.com.

As we said above we will be holding another 2 tournaments, a singles and pairs tournaments.

Saturday - Singles Tournament

On Saturday we had our first Handicap Singles Tournament, this was a well attended event and everyone had a great day. The format was 4 leagues and then a knockout after lunch. The Handicap system worked really well and some members can look at a cut in theirs for the next one as they played so well.

The games threw up some unexpected results and no-one had an easy ride, with the final a very close match with Mike edging out Steve on the last end.

The next tournament will be in December so please keep an eye out for dates and timings.

Sunday - Club Open Day

On Sunday we opened the doors of the club for our Annual Open Day, as with anything these days there was a bit of a concern over if anyone would venture out, but we needn't have worried we had many people coming through the doors of all ages coming to try Bowls.

Some were new bowlers, some returning from a long lay off. All were made welcome with current members on hand to help with coaching and refreshments laid on as well.

Turpin's would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new members and we hope to see you at the club soon.

The NEW 2021 -22 Season!!

The Turpin's Board would like to welcome you to the new Winter season...

All of us at Turpin's are excited planning the full re-opening for the next indoor bowls season.

The Board are focused on providing bowlers with a safe environment to enjoy indoor bowls, so we will continue to maximise ventilation, provide additional space for changing areas and encourage the use of hand sanitisers.

The club will re-open for the new season on Monday 20th September. There will be several "Drives" running, as well as opportunities for roll-ups and some new "one-day competitions" (more info to follow) to allow all players the chance to practice and re-kindle their love for indoor bowls for a couple of weeks before internal leagues start.

Our aim is to re-start all the internal autumn/winter leagues that ran before the pandemic shut-down. Please can all team captains sound-out their old teams to identify if you have any spaces to fill.

If you were a team captain, but need to pass this role to another player, please agree a new captain and let Mike Spraget know asap.

To give teams time to fill any gaps, leagues this season will start week commencing 4th October.

For some of our newer members, joining a league is a great way to play more regularly and improve your bowling. Most leagues have some competitive element, but are not taken too seriously and players of all abilities are welcome. If you don't know someone in an existing team that you can join, please let Mike know which day(s) you are interested in and he will find a team you can join. Most teams have sufficient players so that players on average play every other week, so you are not committing to be available for every game.

Many of our reception staff will not be available for the start of the new season, so the Board will be introducing some "Member run" sessions. Designated key holders will open and close the club. Players will be asked to put their rink fees in envelopes or pay online or use vouchers. A honesty box will be set up for teas/coffees and sometimes the bar. Please bear with us as we introduce this new way of working, it is the only way we can keep the club open every day/evening for you the members.

We hope to be holding a "welcome" social on a Saturday evening in September and we will be running Open Weekends to attract new members, so if you have friends/ neighbours who would like to try indoor bowl, please bring them along. As before, we will have a "new member offer" of £20 for their first year.

Whilst we are talking of membership, many thanks to those of you who paid £42-50 half membership last year, despite having little (or no) chance to play. The Board has therefore agreed these members will receive a £42-50 discount off this year's membership, so no-one will be out of pocket.

Those that have returned to indoor bowls over the last few weeks have said they felt comfortable bowling indoors again, so we would encourage all members to come in and see for yourselves (even if just for a tea/coffee). We would love to see you all back at Turpin's.

Update on Opening hours and restrictions

Hi all

In anticipation of many Government restrictions ending this Monday 19 ^th July, just a quick update on what that means for Turpin’s.

The legal requirement to wear face masks when entering the building and the limit of 36 bowlers will no longer apply.

As per Government guidelines, members have the choice to continuing to wear a mask when moving around the building, but a mask is not required whilst bowling.

Turpin’s will continue to focus on your safety by:

Providing hand sanitisers
maximise ventilation by opening side doors and using ceiling and portable fans
encouraging members to change into bowling shoes down the side of the rinks (bowls and shoes may still be stored in personal lockers)
providing a temperature scanner on entry and encouraging anyone with covid like symptoms not to enter the building
continue to record names of all members and guests each day for Track & Trace purposes.

Please continue to pre-book Tuesday and Friday Morning drives where possible, so organisers have an idea of likely bowler numbers.

Just a reminder, we are also now open most Friday evenings (from circa 7-45pm) and Sunday mornings (from 10am) for roll-ups. Please contact Michael Fernandes (07961 105064) to confirm the club will be open.

Finally, if any members have friends/relatives/neighbours who would like to try indoor bowls, please contact Mike Spraget (07443 226064) and he can set up a basic instruction session so they can have a go for free!

Great news, Turpin's will reopen Tuesday and Friday mornings 10am to 1pm, starting Tuesday 18th May

Please ring 01799 525959 and leave a message to pre-book your place on each of these DRIVE sessions.

Your safety is our primary concern. In line with Government advice, we have maximised ventilation and maintained social distancing, without having to wear a face covering whilst bowling and still enabling everyone to enjoy social bowling and safely meet up with friends.

Full details are listed below:

Turpin’s re-opening May 2021

Subject to any change in Government/EIBA advice, Turpin’s will partially re-open Tuesday 18th May 2021.
The Club will initially open Tuesday & Friday mornings 10am – 1pm for DRIVES
Evening sessions (un—staffed) may be set up by key-holders, for players not able to attend during these two mornings.
All players must book in advance by calling 01799 525959 and leave a message. Staff/ club officers will call you back to confirm a place.
Face masks must be worn when entering the Club and moving about the building, but players may remove face masks when on the rink.
Maximum of six players per rink. Initially every other rink will be used, so a max of 18 players may play. This will be reviewed weekly.
The bar will remain closed, but the water cooler & coffee machine will be available.
Players/visitors may socialise after their game in groups up to six people, until the club closes at 1pm.
Usual rink fees (£3-50) apply to all adult players. Card payments rather than cash is preferred.
Rink fees for evening sessions to be left in an envelope or settled by Bank Transfer at the end of each month.
Players should come ready to play (casual dress is fine) and change into bowling shoes and store coats/bags on chairs down the sides of the rink. There will be limited use of the changing rooms. Toilets will be open.
Ventilation will be maximised with windows and doors open (where safe to do so), and roof and pedestal fans will be switched on.
Players and visitors are advised to bring warm clothing to allow ventilation to be maintained, even when temperatures inside the club are low.
All players and visitors must sign in for every visit.
All games must use two mats/jacks at each end (one per team) to minimise handling. Only one player to operate scoreboard. Players should only touch their own woods.
Sanitisers are available for use around the building.

How did I get in to Bowls

...or more fun with Bowls

So how did I come to be playing bowls, I have played many sports throughout my years from Rugby, Boxing and Triathlons to Archery. Each of these has led to some reason I couldn't do them anymore, injury, age etc. I had recently had to give up Archery after a number of years due to a shoulder injury that would not go away and I needed an outlet and something to do.

It just so happens there was an advert in the local paper for Turpin's Open Day, in September 2019 so with a little apprehension I went along not knowing what to expect, I was met by Bill who took me round to the rack of Woods (not balls) that new players can borrow along with shoes. I was given a bright yellow set of woods to play with and off we went.

Bill rolled up the jack to what seem miles away, and I let my first wood go.....I was hooked, I saw it roll up to the jack and straight past into the ditch but we kept going and with each wood I got closer, before that session had finished I was certain I wanted to carry on playing.

Since then I have played in Club friendlies, Club league matches and the Club Championships. Bowls is a great sport, both for young and old. The club has a great bar and social side where people can relax, restaurant where you can get a bite to eat.

Come and have a go, the club is friendly welcoming and especially in the Winter somewhere you can go that is warm and dry and still get some gentle exercise.

World Indoor Bowls from Potters

Information for the World Indoor Championships from Potters Resort

Hi all

We thought those of you missing your bowls would like to know that the 2021 World Indoor Bowls championships at Potters start tomorrow, Friday 8 ^th January.

We understand Potter’s will be “live streaming” matches see https://www.pottersholidays.com/world-bowls/

Youtube also usually stream matches live.

BBC2 will also be showing matches from Monday 18 ^th January.

The first match features Greg Harlow in a pairs match starting 10am Friday 8 ^th Jan.

The Board would like to take this opportunity to wish all members a Happy New Year.

We will of course keep in close contact with the Government and EIBA on when we may be able to re-open Turpin’s and will keep you all informed.

We hope you are all safe and well. We have now received the latest Government and EIBA guidelines for Essex in Tier 2.

Having discussed them, the Turpins Board have Risk and Financially Assessed the situation and feel it is not viable for us to reopen the club under these restrictions.

We will review this as the situation changes and keep you informed.

May we thank the many members who have supported the club by paying 50% (£42.50) membership for 2020/2021.

Let's hope 2021 will return to something close to normal

Welcome to the new Turpin's website

As we go through 2020 we have had many changes and the website is one of those changes. Hopefully we can move forward in the New Year and to do this we need to ensure the club has a modern online presence. If you have any ideas or we have got something wrong please let us know so we can get the changes made.
